Storm Damage on an Irish home

Storm Damage Repairs Covered

Met Éireann issues Yellow, Orange and Red wind warnings by county, and strong gusts lift slates, ridge tiles and flashings on Irish roofs. Roofers make the roof safe and watertight first, then carry out permanent repairs once the weather settles.

Emergency make-safe

Loose slates, ridge tiles and chimney pots are secured or removed so nothing else falls.

Temporary tarping

A secured tarpaulin keeps rain out of the roof space until permanent repairs can be done.

Lifted and missing slates

Slipped, lifted and missing slates are replaced and fixed to current standards.

Ridge and hip tiles

Ridge and hip tiles blown off or loosened by wind are re-bedded or refixed with a dry ridge system.

Flashings and valleys

Lead and other flashings peeled back by wind are dressed back or replaced.

Gutters and fascia

Gutters, fascia and soffits torn loose in a storm are refitted or replaced.

Options

Wind and Irish Roofs

Storm Éowyn

In January 2025 it brought a Status Red wind warning to every county in Ireland and set a national gust record of 183 km/h at Mace Head in Co. Galway.

Exposure zones

The NSAI slating code S.R. 82:2017 maps Ireland into moderate and severe wind exposure zones, which set how slates and tiles are fixed.

Coastal homes

Homes near the Atlantic, Irish Sea and Celtic Sea take more wind uplift and salt corrosion at ridges, verges and flashings.

Rules and Standards to Know

01

Safety

Under the Construction Regulations 2013, homeowners who hire a roofer are clients. For a single-contractor job, the main duty is to check the roofer is competent and has a plan for working at height.

02

Slating standard

The NSAI Code of Practice S.R. 82:2017 sets slating and tiling practice for Irish pitched roofs, including fixing standards for moderate and severe wind exposure zones.

03

Asbestos

The Health and Safety Authority requires asbestos to be identified before maintenance or renovation starts on buildings from before 2005. Many older Irish roofs used asbestos cement slates.

04

Part L and storm repairs

Government guidance treats essential repairs after storm damage differently from planned renovation, so storm repairs alone do not usually trigger a whole-house energy upgrade.

Schemes

Grants That Can Help

There is no general grant for roofing work in Ireland, but these schemes can cover it in the right circumstances.

Housing Aid for Older People Grant

Up to €10,700 for essential repairs for homeowners aged 66 and over, administered by your local council. Roof repairs are usually covered. Approval is needed before work starts.

Storm Damage: Questions, Answered

What should I do first after storm damage to my roof?

Stay off the roof and keep clear of anything that could fall. Take photos from the ground, move belongings away from leaks inside, and arrange a make-safe. Permanent repairs can follow once the weather settles.

Will my home insurance cover storm damage to my roof?

That depends on your policy. Insurers usually ask for photos of the damage and a written repair quote, so ask the roofer for an itemised quote that describes the storm damage.

Should I go up on the roof to check the damage?

No. Wet, wind-damaged roofs are dangerous to walk on. Check from the ground or from the attic, and leave work at height to a roofer with the right access equipment.

How do I prepare my roof before a storm?

Have slipped slates, loose ridge tiles and lifted flashings repaired before winter, clear gutters and valleys, and secure anything loose around the roof such as satellite dishes and chimney cowls.
